As I was driving home tonight, Jason Bentley (of KCRW’s Metropolis) was on the radio. I was having a nice time driving down the 10 freeway (no traffic, finally) back towards USC. Jason’s awesome voice filtered through the speakers as he listed off the tracks that had recently played, did a station promo, and let the song underneath continue on for the next few minutes. It sounded familiar — but I couldn’t put my finger on it. As LA came into view, the piece took a rather dramatic turn and opened up into a vast landscape of musical hills and canyons, and it hit me — Ulrich Schnauss. Brand new Ulrich Schnauss at that. The music was beautiful, with the same quality of liefelijk — the Dutch word for “child-like innocence” (imagine girls in dresses dancing in fields of daisies under a warm sun) — that Schnauss is so known for.

It made me smile. Really hard. Like, a lot. And then the weirdest thing happened. I started laughing, and then I was smiling and laughing and suddenly I was crying, too. I was entering the exit lane for Western/Normandie (one of LA’s finest merges) and I could barely see because there were tears in the way. It was beautiful, beautiful music, with such strong connections to my emotions; after all, the last time I heard a brand new Ulrich Schnauss song was back in 2005, when I was seeing him live at the Knitting Factory, and things changed a lot.

There's a Jason Bentley in North Carolina who goes by Shadowazrael on LiveJournal and describes himself as "college graduate (B.A. philosophy and religion), living with his father, taking EMT (emergency medical technician) courses. I work at an ambulance transport company (convalescence, not emergency), and I volunteer at Apex EMS."

He just wrote an interesting paper called "Foundation & Coherence" that defines "coherence theory is like conventional foundation theory, but prioritizing only simple logic (consistency), not sense experience." He goes on to ask, "we’ve already noted the advantage of prioritizing logic (avoiding intellectual chaos); but what are the advantages and disadvantages of prioritizing or not prioritizing sense experience?"

Day-um:-) I bet he'd get along with my friend Doron.

Woohoo! There's another gay Jason Bentley, and in Pike County, Kentucky - which is where my paternal family is from. It's likely we share a bloodline. And interestingly enough, our birthdays are within a few days of each other, but six years apart. We definitely share big, brown eyes.

Check out his MySpace page. I especially dig his penchant for long, Morrissey-esque titles on his blog entries: "Jason Bentley will be leaving the show, the role of Jason will be picked at random", "I remembered you the moment I met you", " There will be no constillation [sic] prize..this time the bone is broken clean"

Since he's likely a distant cousin, is it weird to think he's hot? Or is that just a given?

I signed up for a Bebo account today.

Bebo is Yet Another Social Network - in fact, it's the Kylie Minogue of social networks - hugely popular everywhere but the United States. Given it's high profile, I wasn't too shocked to find another Jason Bentley had beat me to the punch. With the name jasonbentley thus occupied, I settled on the slightly more cumbersome jasonbentleydotorg.bebo.com with the (futile) hope that everyone I know on MySpace will see the light and switch to the far more usable Bebo.

This bloke appears to be English but living abroad in Germany with his family, and it's rather nice to see someone so publicly devoted to his kids while maintaining a good taste in music and movies.

Jason was a popular name for boys in the late 60's-early 70's, so most of us Jasons Bentley are in our 30's. It's interesting how differently we all deal with the issue of coming-of-age and coming-of-aged. This guy knocks on the door of his 40's with the bemused humor of someone whose already ensured a legacy in the kids he dearly loves. At 32, I'm glad I'm old enough to appreciate that, and not yet old enough to regret not having had kids myself (and more important, I suppose - not yet old enough to change my decision if I so desire).

of course, one dream is to end up on Metropolis. i know i'm far off from that, but it could happen. look at Cut Chemist: he's exploded into the world of dub and turntable music, doing ads for Apple now, making craploads of money and having a blast. and he started out small too, eventually being played on Morning Becomes Eclectic and Metropolis and going from there.

did i mention how much i heart Jason Bentley?

All one can ask is...who doesn't? ;-) Readers should check out Xaos' page at MySpace and listen to some of her stuff. It's good.

If I had a radio show where I played new music to total strangers, to learn that my work inspired one of those strangers to create good new music and dream of one day being a guest on my show might elicit, at the very least, a pregnant pause of humility and wonder at the circular, interlocking curlicues of life, the fickle interplay of fate and chaos, and the awesome power of music to bring it all together.

But that's just me.

i grabbed a copy of la vie en rose (grace jones ya'll) off of joe.my.god and simply blissed out. not for nostalgia just for the fine mix that it is. compare it to many of the drum and bass - jazz/world whatever music that mr payola, jason bentley, spins on metropolis and you'll bliss likewise. sure jason still spins some vital music but really all this house blending into jazz blending into hip-hop just doesn't cut it. it's too safe. i did hear one very passionately written and performed song tonight but it's rare that anything matters like portishead did when they were first broadcast. i guess i'm to blame for falling back on kcrw for new music.

I feel icky quoting and commenting on a blog that I'm quoting, but I'll just mentioned that LA's tectonically-unsound neon clubland isn't place where I enjoy the 'unsafe' music otherwise available outside the downtemposhoegazing environs of KCRW. Secondly, "it's rare that anything matters like portishead did when they were first broadcast" is spot on, but comparing most new music to a watershed seems unfair. Portishead's "Dummy" was the musical predecessor of "The Matrix" - it came out of nowhere with the full force of surprise, while creating and existing entirely on its own otherworldly-but-familiar plane. Dummy broke rules, made new ones, and inspired legions. It will stand the test of time like Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's LHCB.

When I first started to work through musical ideas for "Train", the song immediately struck me as resembling "Torn", the first track on "MyOwn Prison" by Creed. I was inspired by the percussionist Scott Philips to play a slower open rock groove to accompany the lead bass line. I love how the bass guitar opens this song, and thus the album. I love to turn up the volume in my car and let those low tones rattle the windows. The aspect of this song that really brings out the personality of HDH, in my opinion, is the bass solo in half-time. The determination that is expressed in the chorus meets its match musically with this phrase of the music. This song sums up some of my personal struggles as a musician in this band_ Will I be able to change the way I think about music and play my instrument as to create art? You hear the influence of rock returning to dance, whether it's rhythmic rock bands like Franz Ferdinand, or the whole school of Brit-rock, or bands like Interpol. Warp, one of the greatest electronic labels of all time, just procured a rock record by Maximo Park. FORT WORTH, Texas -- A north Texan is one of eight Americans killed in Monday's terrorst attack in Saudi Arabia. Jason Bentley, 35, of Hurst, died when suicide bombers hit the housing complex where he lived. Bentley worked overseas for a defense contractor. He served 10 years in the Army before going into the private sector. Bentley had planned to return to north Texas next week for a family vacation. He leaves behind his parents and a teenage daughter. Meanwhile, Saudi Prince Bandar says his country will be relentless in rooting out those responsible for the deadly attacks. Officals have acknowledged that 15 Saudis carried out the attacks that left 34 people dead.

An Experimental Metasociotechnicultural Mashup

This site is an experiment in free technology and social networking. I first became aware of another Jason Bentley in 1991 when I saw my name on the back of a CD called (appropriately enough) California Dreamin'. That Jason Bentley went on to become an icon of LA down-tempo clubland. It only got interesting once I moved West, but that's another story which I'll tell another time.

As Internet use exploded I realized that there were many Jasons Bentley out there, at least one in nearly every state and large numbers in Appalachia - home of my paternal roots. Over time it seemed to me that we Jasons Bentley are disproporationately musical, creative people. I thought 'wouldn't it be cool if all the musicians named Jason Bentley issued a compilation or collaborated on music over the Internet?" This site evolved from that idea.

If I might indulge my inner Carl Sagan for a moment... Emergent technologies on the Web are enabling new ways of connecting with unlikely groups of people at very little cost. We've entered a fascinating, exciting, and occasionally troubling time where human interaction is perhaps more openly experimental across all levels of society than ever before. The simultaneous evolution of broadband access, low-cost interchangable "open" technologies, social networks, and the more dynamic approach to information characterized by tagging and "mashups" is fostering an unprecedented democracy in creative expression.

So my goal is to reach and network with as many Jasons Bentley as I can, and to use this site as a hub for communication, creative expression, and as a testing ground for whatever gizmos I'm playing with at the time. I will document what I find on the web in this blog. Now that Google is hosting the email for jasonbentley.org (thanks to the unpublicized Google Apps for Your Domain program), I'll give any Jason Bentley who wants one a free email/calendar account at jasonbentley.org (complete with 2GB of secure, Google-hosted storage and the nifty Gmail/Gcal interface).

My initial research alone has been fascinating - how cool is it that a Jason Bentley in Oregon fronts a band called "Namesake?" Cool parallels and differences will only grow as more Jasons come to light. I've nothing to sell and no agenda other than to meet cool namesakes, geek out, and maybe to get a little bit of an idea of the answer to the question, "what's in a name?"

Especially if it happens to be Jason Bentley.
